YESTERDAY

Yesterday came like a shocker
She hadn’t learnt of betrayal
Nobody wrote her a letter
Telling her it won’t be better.

How would I have known
That this wasn’t her fault
How would I have known
This was not what she sought
How could I have changed
All the writings on the wall
When dawn came too early
Yesterday.

In the story she had told me
She was once a little girl
A pretty child of innocence
Waiting to be born the second time
She had scores and scores of friends
All of them she’d sworn to love
Until they left one by one
Ignoring how hurt she was.

How could she have known
That they always planned to part
How could she have known
That her cultures meant little to them
What she gladly shared
She had never once withheld
Until dawn came too early
Yesterday.
